Write an expository/persuasive essay in which you name one person on this campus that YOU FEEL EXEMPLIFIES ONE of the three aspects of a “Warrior” contained within the chart. Be sure to make a clear thesis, give a variety of examples of to support your ideas.
Make a strategy, think on paper, organize those thoughts

What’s your topic? who is the person you think exemplifies one of the aspects of “Warrior” on the shield?

Let's Go Warrior Nation!

Lots of Great Stuff!!!!

Today, we officially start our new non-fiction unit.  It is entitled the "Pursuit of Unhappiness."  It's a unit from the CSU Expository Reading and Writing Curriculum/Course, specifically designed for English 2/10th grade.

We have a bit of 'catch up' to do today (due to the registration and benchmark requirements last week).  I am hoping we can get it all accomplished today. If not, we will pick up where necessary on Thursday.

Today, we have our Vocab 10 quiz, the Vocab 10 work is due, new seating charts, review CAHSEE practice test status, the introductory activities for our unit, AND reviewing the three articles that we have read, shredded, and annotated.

Good Day!!

Today we are reading "Are You Living Your Eulogy or Your Resume'?"  After we read it, we will analyze, shred, rip apart, discuss, etc the article as practice for what good readers do when reading non-fiction.

Steps to Shred/Analyze/Dissect an Article

1.  Preview the text: (Get an idea of what you expect to read)

A) Do you see any sections? How are they marked? (by spaces, subheadings, etc.)
B) Are there any visuals? charts, pictures, quotes
C) Do you get any additional information from visuals

2.  As you read:

A) Write ?s (question marks) in the margin near things that you don't understand
    B) Circle words you don't know or phrases that are confusing
    C) Underline ideas you think are important
D) Write !s (exclamation marks) around ideas or statements that need a second look.
E) Write happy faces :-) or sad faces :-( for ideas or statements that you either agree or disagree with

A New Semester!! Fresh Start!!

Welcome!!

I am so excited for Spring and our new semester!

Tidbits:

Tech:I am going to take advantage of more technology with a classroom blog (cathleenpetty.blogspot.com) and also with Instagram (catpettyrhs) to post homework, etc.  As usual, I still have the website (www.wix.com/catpetty/ms_pettys_website) and the google voice phone number 805/270-5621.  Also, students can also sign up for text reminders using our class service, Remind101.

Grades: I will be addding a column on the grade page in AERIES for each assignment. When a student turns in an assignment, it will be given two points so that parents know if work has been turned in on time.  If the assignment gets turned in late, it will reflect one point.  Obviously, missing assignments will receive a zero.  Then, I will add a second column for each assignment when the assignment is actually graded.

Curriculum:  We are so happy for this semester's material.  We will be focusing on curriculum and learning, personalized to you and your future. We have five main areas...the novel, career education, CAHSEE prep, non-fiction, and a personalized project.  Start thinking about what matters to you!!!  SO EXCITED!!

Reminders:

Vocab:  We will be returning to our weekly vocabulary quizzes on Monday, January 13, 2014.

Naviance: If you haven't logged into Naviance ever, please see me :)

Syllabus: If you haven't received a copy or would like a new one, it's on my website under forms.

Gmail: If you don't have a gmail account for class, please see me and the instructions are on my website!

See you Wednesday!!
